VAN ASTEN, ‘Paul’ Ferdinand Carl Louis Paul – b. 24 March 1858 in Berlin, Brandenburg Provinz, Prussia, Deutschland. He appears tp be the son of Carl Luis VAN ASTEN & Clara Franziscka Antonie Henriette Amalie MEYER –– son of a Military Officer family – and if so it is a younger brother Johannes Ferdinand Van ASTEN who was baptised on 30 Mai 1864 at the Military Regiment 60, Strausberg, Brandenburg, Prussia. Paul seems to have come to Australia to reject the Miltarism which ramped up from the time of the German Unification of 1871. Such an act was seen as traitorous desertion by those who remained in Germany and many such who rejection militarism were cut off from the family entirely. He arrived at Port Melbourne on the ship ‘Whampoo”on 22 Sept 1878. He appears to have lived a roving life working as a labourer. He was Naturalised at Picola, near Barmah, Vic. on the 25th January 1911 at the age of 52, after 32 years in Australia. He was then single, and working as a labourer. He remained single for life. In the 1930s he was living among the German-heritage settlers on the Dandenong Creek Valley in Bayswater, where had a home in Hamiltons Road while working as a labourer- He died in 1937 in South Camberwell. He was buried on the 20/07/1937 in the Lutheran Section of the Springvale Cemetery. Significantly, after a lifetime of family rejection, his death certificate appears to have only included his mother’s name.
