David Louis Pettavel wed Esther Keanan in 1847 at Church of England Christ Church, Geelong

David Pettaval a Swiss émigré, upon arriving in Port Phillip Bay on the barque Platina in 1841 he immediately recognised in the hills behind Geelong a fine place in which to grow grapes and produce wine. He returned to Switzerland to recruit more wine-makers and soon turned the area into one of the most productive grape growing regions in Australia.

In 1842 a young Swiss emigre, David Pettavel, arrived in the fledgling Port Phillip on the barque Platina in 1841. He headed not for Melbourne but for the hills behind Geelong where his instincts told him he could continue the craft he had learned in his homeland - wine making. Pettavel is credited with planting the first wines in the colony and soon after, bottling the first wine.
